Canadian Cyclists Compete at the Road Cycling World Championships
Coaches of Canada would like to congratulate Luc Arseneau, ChPC, Vincent Jourdain, ChPC and their support staff on Canada’s recent strong performances at the Road Cycling World Championships in Switzerland.
In the women’s 26.8 kilometre individual time trial, Tara Witten of Edmonton finished eighth, one minute and 33.99 seconds behind the winning time. Witten, a silver medalist at the Track Cycling World Championships in March, was competing at her first road worlds. In the men’s 33.2 kilometre under-23 time trial, David Veilleux of Cap-Rouge, QC, finished 10th, one minute and 11.93 seconds behind the winning cyclist from Australia.
Michael Barry of Toronto had an impressive 18th place finish in the elite men’s 262 kilometre road race. Barry finished 2 minutes and 44 seconds behind Cadel Evans of Australia who won the gold medal in six hours and 56 minutes and 26 seconds.
Sven Tuft of Langley, BC, placed 15th in the men’s 49.6 kilometre time trial, 4 minutes and 24.25 seconds behind the new world champion from Sweden.
Erinne Willock of Victoria finished a career-high seventh in the 124.2 kilometre women’s road race. Willock was in a group sprinting for fifth placed and placed one minute and seven seconds behind the winner.
“We were happy with the results. We got three top 10 finishes and we were in the top 20 in all events but one; and in that race, we were in the main breakaway of the day from almost 110kms,: said Arseneau. “Everything was well planned. From the hotel, the staff, the food and logistics; all of this contributes greatly to the success of such important competitions.”
