Welcome Canada Games Coaches

"In my view it should be mandatory for all coaches to be members of Coaches of Canada. If we want coaching to be valued in Canada, if we want to be able to show the positive impact the profession of coaching can have on so many, we need to have a strong collective voice. That voice is the Coaches of Canada. I would encourage all Canada Games coaches to become members and part of the rally cry that says COACHING MATTERS!"

- Sue Hylland, President and CEO, Canada Games Council

About Coaches of Canada

Coaches of Canada represents the profession of coaching in Canada.

Established in 1985, Coaches of Canada is the national organization that represents the profession of coaching in Canada. We are a member-driven organization, and our members are coaches who represent all sports, both professional and amateur. Our members are people who have chosen to be a coach. What uniformly characterizes our members is that they are recognized and respected as professionals. Our members coach at the highest levels of Canadian sport as well as at all levels in communities across our country.

The vision of the organization is rooted in the belief that coach leadership consistently represents the highest attainable standards and is delivered with competence by practitioners who are regarded as well-trained, skilled, and ethical educators. The vision embodies coaching as a respected and viable career choice for those who select coaching as their life work. We envision a sport system that is coach-led and athlete-focused.

Mission and Beliefs

To advance the profession of coaching; and to advance the contribution coaches make to individuals, teams, communities and society.

Coaches of Canada believes…

  • the role of the coach goes beyond the performance of an athlete/team. Coaches provide inspiration, build strength in character and contribute to realizing potential...
  • the profession of coaching needs to be guided by the highest standards of ethical conduct and that no genuine achievement in sport is possible without ethical conduct...
  • in recognizing the critical role played by the extensive network of volunteer coaches in the Canadian sport environment...
  • and that coaches must lead by example in their sport and their communities.

Advantages of Being a Member

Professional coaches have committed themselves to providing competent and comprehensive coaching. They have achieved the highest levels of competency through education, training and experience, ethical behaviour and professional conduct.

Coaches of Canada was established in order to provide support and services to its membership of professional coaches. In that vain, Coaches of Canada strives to:

  • connect its members and the coaching community in order to foster peer-to-peer learning and leadership opportunities;
  • promote the profession of coaching and the value of a coach by providing a collective voice for the needs of coaches and for the valuable role coaches play to the media, government, within the sport system and to the public;
  • regulate the profession of coaching and protect the public interest by ensuring members obey high standards of ethical conduct; and
  • serve its members with access to services and benefits that improve their daily professional lives.

Through the work of its Professional Practices Committee, Coaches of Canada strives to raise the standards of professional coaches and to represent coach issues that arise within the profession.

Coaches of Canada is also affiliated with other national associations, including the Coaching Association of Canada, Canada Olympic and Paralympic Committees, Canada Games Council, Commonwealth Games Association of Canada and Sport Canada. Partnering with these groups provides Coaches of Canada with input on recent developments in the coaching and sporting professions on a broad scale.
