This award is presented to the National Sport Organization (NSO) that demonstrates a consistent approach to valuing and recognizing the role of the coach within the organization, with the media, and with the public.
The winning NSO will be notified in advance and the award will be presented during Petro-Canada Sport Leadership sportif at the Sport Leadership Annual Awards Dinner.
The nomination should demonstrate how the NSO values the coach by:
- consistent presence on website and in publications,
- news releases announcing coach appointments,
- ensuring that when an athlete wins, the coach is recognized in media coverage, and not only the current coach, but the developmental coaches as well,
- detailed coaches’ profiles on website,
- offering annual coaching awards,
- demonstrating in hiring practices and employment practices that the NSO values its coaches,
- naming of coaches to board of directors and relevant committees, and
- making coaches part of the senior management team that provides and drives the NSO vision.
The 2008 Selection Committee consists of: Sheila Robertson, Chair; Steven Sugar, Presiden of Coaches of Canada; Gail Donohue, Vice President, Director at Large; and Denise Vourtzoumis, Director at Large, Non-coaching function.

“Skate Canada met our criteria to the letter,” says Gail Donohue of Vancouver, a member of the Coaches of Canada board of directors. “Coaches serve on its board of directors and as members of many committees. It promotes and recognizes its coaches internally, through its web site, publications, and annual awards, and externally on many levels and through various media.”
2006

Coaches of Canada recognizes Diving Plongeon Canada with the presentation of the Sheila Robertson Award. Introduced in 2005, this award is presented to the National Sport Organization that demonstrates a commitment to promoting and recognizing its coaches within the organization and the community through the use of various media outlets.
“Diving Canada promotes and values its coaches on so many levels,” said Gail Donohue, Board of Directors secretary, Coaches of Canada. “They recognize the vital role a coach plays in an athlete’s success, feature their coaches in public communications and involve their coaches to contribute to the vision and success of the organization.”
2005

The inaugural Sheila Robertson Award was awarded to the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) in recognition of their consistent approach in promoting and valuing the role of the coach within their organization, the media and the public. Tracy Terry accepted the award on behalf of the CYA at the Petro-Canada Sport Leadership sportif conference.
