Jack Donohue "Coach of the Year"

Award Criteria :

This award is presented annually in recognition of a coach's dedication to the profession of coaching and the outstanding performance of their athletes during the past competitive season.

The recipient of this award is selected by the Board of Directors of Coaches of Canada and is honoured at the annual Sport Leadership sportif Awards Dinner.

The nomination should demonstrate how the coach meets the following criteria:
  • Proven capacity to improve team or athlete performance
  • Applies relevant training theory and coaching practices
  • Demonstrates concern for long-term athlete development
  • Demonstrates care and concern for fellow coaches
  • Presents a strong and morale public image
  • Demonstrates a philosophy of fair play
  • Member in-good-standing with Coaches of Canada
The 2008 Selection Committee consists of: Sheila Robertson, Chair; Steven Sugar, Presiden of Coaches of Canada; Gail Donohue, Vice President, Director at Large; and Denise Vourtzoumis, Director at Large, Non-coaching function.

To nominate a coach please e-mail a letter outlining how the nominee meets the award criteria to info@coachesofcanada or by fax to 416.426.7331 or by mail to Coaches of Canada at 606 – 1185 Eglinton Ave., E, Toronto, ON M3C 3C6.

Submissions for 2008 must be received by Wednesday October 1, 2008 at 4pm eastern.

2007 :: Paul Kristofic, ChPC
Alpine Ski
 
In only his first season as head coach of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team’s men’s program, Kristofic led his skiers to 12 podium performances, a result not seen since the heady days of the Crazy Canucks. Highlights include downhiller Jan Hudec’s silver medal at the 2007 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships; Erik Guay’s five podium performances, including his first-ever World Cup win; John Kucera winning a Super-G at the Bombardier Lake Louise Winterstart, becoming the first Canadian to win on home soil since Rob Boyd in 1989; Manuel Osborne-Paradis capturing two World Cup podiums; and Michael Janyk recording his first World Cup podium performance, a second-place finish at a Slalom in Beaver Creek, CO.


2006 :: Xiuli Wang, ChPC
Long track speed skating
 
Ms. Wang’s nomination emerged from a record twelve nominees for the Coach of the Year award. Xiuli was the 1500m world champion in 1990 as a member of the Chinese national team and joined the staff at the Olympic Oval after moving to Calgary in 1998. She has been a national coach of the all-round program since 2002 and was coach of four medalists at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, including speed skating stars Clara Hughes and Kristina Groves.

2005 :: Patrick Oaten, ChPC
Water Polo

Patrick Oaten became Head Coach of the Canadian Women’s Water Polo Team almost three years ago. The Team’s outstanding performance at last summer’s XI FINA World Championships won them a bronze medal victory over Russia in their final game. Since becoming a national coach in 1997, Patrick has masterminded a Pan American Games silver medal, the 2003 junior world championship and the 2005 world bronze, along with the 2002 Commonwealth Championship silver medal and a seventh-place finish in the Athens Olympic Games.
2004 :: Kelly Manjak
Gymnastics

Kelly Manjak coached Kyle Shewfelt to the Olympic gold medal on floor this past summer in Athens as well as a fourth place finish on the vault. Manjak and Shewfelt worked together for 16 years, starting when Shewfelt's mother enrolled her son in the sport at age six in order to channel his energies.
2003 :: Michel Larouche
Diving

After a 12-year career as a competitive diver, which included a national junior title and two Canada Games gold medals, Larouche joined Montreal's CAMO Club as a coach in 1985. He was hired by Donald Dion, who coached Sylvie Bernier to Olympic gold in 1984. By 1989 he was the head coach of the club which is now recognized as one of the best diving clubs in the world.
