Coaches of Canada expressed disappointment in the 2007 Federal Budget

Ottawa, Ontario – March 20, 2007  Coaches of Canada (CofC) expresses disappointment in the 2007 Federal Budget after it failed to address the Conservative Government’s campaign promise to invest the equivalent of 1% of the federal health spending on sport and physical activity. Other areas Coaches of Canada expected to see in the budget were committed funding for the Road to Excellence summer programming and specifics to address the sport and recreation infrastructure issues facing so many communities and municipalities in Canada.

Coaches of Canada was encouraged that there were areas of commitment in the budget for sport and physical activity including a modest commitment to several “heritage” sports and to accelerate funding commitments for Own the Podium winter programming should cash flow become an issue in the preparatory phases leading up to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Coaches of Canada expects that the move of large equalization measures to the provinces and territories will result in commitments to sport infrastructure development including facilities and employment opportunities for coaches by the provinces and territories.

“Coaches are one of Canada’s most amazing public assets in the depth and reach they can have in shaping and molding the next generation of Canadians – yet coaching is not a recognized profession,” said Tricia Spooner, chief operating officer of Coaches of Canada. “Coaches of Canada will continue its work with all levels of government for committed investment in sport, sport infrastructure and coaching employment opportunities – and for backing of its mandate to advance of the profession of coaching.”
