Bruce Pirnie, ChPC named as Coach Ambassador for 2007 Canada Winter Games

Ottawa, Ontario – February 20, 2007  Coaches of Canada is pleased to announce the selection of Bruce Pirnie, ChPC as coach ambassador for the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon. Coaches of Canada is the non-profit, multi-sport service organization that represents the profession of coaching and services its body of professional coach members.

The coach ambassador position was established as part of Coaches of Canada’s Major Games initiative entitled “Coach HOUSE”. The program provides opportunities for its members to gain experience and to demonstrate leadership abilities in a major games environment. During Major Games, the coach ambassador provides supplementary support to working coaches, in tandem with services offered by the Games franchise holder organization.

The Awards and Selection Committee of Coaches of Canada reviewed a list of nominees put forward by the provincial and territorial Chef de Missions for the Canada Winter Games. Final selection of the ambassador was based on a list of pre-defined criteria, and Mr. Pirnie was chosen as the coach who would best satisfy the objectives of the role.

Bruce Pirnie, a long-standing member of Coaches of Canada, is the Director of Developmental Programs with Athletics Canada. Bruce is the former Head Track Coach at the University of Manitoba and former Director of the National Coaching Institute (NCI)-Manitoba. Bruce is the current President of the Manitoba Chapter of Coaches of Canada and a Chartered Professional Coach (ChPC).  As an athlete, Bruce was a member of the Canada Track and Field Team from 1970–1979, during which time he captained the Olympic Track and Field Teams in 1972 and 1976 and was a gold medalist in Shot Put at the Pan American Games in 1975.

Bruce will work on-site in Whitehorse with chief operating officer, Tricia K. Spooner, to advocate the virtues of membership and to communicate progress the organization has made in the area of professionalization of coaching.
